BridgeDummy vs Bridge Base Online (BBO): Training Compared

As of August 2026, these two products do different jobs. Bridge Base Online (BBO) is the largest online bridge platform, with around 11.6 million monthly visits. Bridge Master teaches real declarer technique, but it covers one dimension of the game: card play.

BBO also launched the BBO Trainer app around 2025. It is a separate mobile app (iOS and Android only, no web version) with a Daily Challenge, Mini Bridge for beginners, Free Deals, and an AI Challenge mode. I designed BridgeDummy around a different idea. Every puzzle scores your decision against double-dummy analysis across 1,000+ simulated deals that match the auction. You do not just learn whether you were right or wrong. You see how every alternative compares, ranked 1 to 5 stars. The puzzles cover bidding and opening leads, in both matchpoints and IMPs, always from the South seat.

BBO has no standalone bidding practice mode. You can practice by playing robot games, but there is no quiz format, no scoring of individual bids, and no way to isolate bidding decisions from the rest of the hand. The robots include Basic GIB, Advanced GIB, GIBBO (a neural net launched January 2026), Argine, and ACBL Ben. Robot quality varies. GIB bidding has been described as "about C-player level" on BridgeWinners, though GIBBO is a clear step up.

I built two free, unlimited practice modes that are fully public: no account, no download, no diamonds. The Bidding Gym deals you a hand, three EPBot bots bid with you, and after the auction you see how your contract scores across 20 simulated layouts with double-dummy evaluation. The Lead Gym shows you an auction and your hand, you pick a lead, and every card is scored by double-dummy analysis across layouts matching the auction. Both run entirely in the browser.

Opening lead practice is the biggest gap in BBO's training tools. No other major platform offers a dedicated, scored lead trainer either. I built Lead Gym because I was tired of guessing whether my lead was right. Now I can check, against the simulation, in two seconds.

Bridge Master is BBO's strongest training feature. The hand-crafted problems and the "perfect defense" mechanic teach real technique: squeezes, endplays, and deceptive plays all appear at the higher levels. For structured declarer-play practice with curated problems, Bridge Master is proven and has been around for over two decades.

BridgeDummy's Declarer Trainer is a free, unlimited mode where you play declarer against adaptive defense powered by DDS compiled to WebAssembly in your browser. It uses random deals rather than curated problems, so it is less structured than Bridge Master. BridgeDummy also has suit combinations for single-suit technique, including a custom solver that analyzes any card combination on demand.

Here is the honest tradeoff. Bridge Master tests complete declarer play on carefully authored problems. BridgeDummy is more flexible: random deals, any suit combination you want. For pure declarer training with curated content, Bridge Master has the edge. For volume and variety, BridgeDummy gives you more range.

BBO's free tier is generous for playing. Social tables, Vugraph, basic Bridge Master levels, and daily robot games cost nothing. BBO Premium costs $5.99 per month for the first year, with an extra month free when you join on the web, then $9.99 per month after that. Tournament entry costs BB$, roughly $0.25 to $5 per event. The BBO Trainer app is a separate $9.99 per month subscription, separate from BBO Premium.

• Vugraph. Watch world-class bridge live with expert commentary. Nothing else compares.
